RELATIVE CLAUSES AND SPEAKING WITH A TOUCH OF COMPETITION

It's time for us to play and tell the truth. Three students, conversation assistant and the dynamic is basically the same as we can see in this hilarious TV program (we will adapt the questions) The assistant will insist on asking details about the affirmative answers

A "FLOATING" BIKE

The most difficult moment, that of taking the first step. We know it's hard to get out of our comfort zone in the classroom. Speaking English is risky and even more so if we feel observed. Forget it, the world belongs to the brave!

NOW WE HAVE SOME INFORMAL CONVERSATION. THINK A LITTLE BIT AND TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF

SENTENCES IN A HAT

This activity is designed for those students who are shy, passive or who will never raise their hand to participate or contribute ideas. We can use them in two ways:
1. Students take their sentence out of the bag and we give them five minutes to think and prepare their answer
2. The student takes his phrase out of the bag and improvises the answer
Of course what matters is the dynamics of the activity, the phrases can be adapted at any level

ROLLING QUESTION GAME
An endless series of questions. It can be used to start a class, to complete the class if we have a few minutes left. It is also an excellent resource for the conversation assistant

THE MORAL DILEMMA ACTIVITY

A moral dilemma typically involves a situation in which a difficult decision must be made regarding two or more choices that are not necessarily moral or ethical. There are times in life when we come across moral dilemmas that test our mental prowess and judgment. We must decide which is the lesser of two evils. Oftentimes, there is no easy or correct choice

CONVERSATION ASSISTANTS: THE WHEEL DECIDES

Let the wheel decide. Save your energy for the big decisions

It's the first day of school with the speech assistants. They may have to come into class unexpectedly. No one has prepared anything. We can start with a series of questions. The students ask the assistant, the assistant then asks the students

CUE CARDS FOR A SPEAKING TEST

These cards can be used for students to prepare a short presentation or a test in which they must talk about the selected topic for a certain time. The topic can be prepared in class with the help of the conversation assistant. All students have work to do and are clear about the task they have to do

BANANA DICTATION

(Source:https://teflgeek.net/glossary-reference/)

Similar to a normal dictation task – i.e. you have a short text which you read out and which the learners write down.
Except…  you substitute the word banana for a selection of target vocabulary items. For example – you say “I hated maths at school.  I didn’t do any of the banana, never paid attention to the banana and I skipped classes whenever I banana.”

EITHER: The learners copy the whole text (as per a normal dictation) and then complete the banana gaps afterwards.

OR: The learners only listen for and write down the banana words (i.e. not the whole text, just what they think the target items are)

  • A FUNNY DICTATION

CONDITIONALS SPEAKING ACTIVITY

CLASSROOM LANGUAGE

Classroom language is  the routine language that's used on an everyday basis in schoolroom like giving instructions of praise, as an example “Take out your books” or “Please sit down”. this can be language that teachers are used to using and students are used to hearing, however once teaching a language it takes a while to be told this a part of the language. Knowing these language basics reduces the amount that students are forced to use their mother tongue and will increase the amount of the target language they're using

NOW, TRY THIS

EVERYDAY RESPONSES

THIS ACTIVITY COMES FROM https://www.teach-this.com

This type of exercise is more strict and does not lead to improvisation by the student. I call it "info transfer" because we transfer new information about a structure or "skeleton". Students create a new dialogue in pairs
